"Older lobsters are more fertile than younger lobsters" (Source 1)
-The world of biology continues to amaze me. Reminds me of the current trend in humans of using Viagra and similar drugs to extend the sex life of older men and their (appreciative?) playmates.
In addition, lobsters can be very long-lived. In fact, "Some scientists have claimed that they could effectively live indefinitely, barring injury, disease, capture, etc." (Source 1).
Their longevity allows them to reach large sizes. The largest lobster caught according to the Guinness World Records, was an American or North Atlantic lobster and weighed 44 pounds 6 ounces (20.14 kg), and was 1.06 metres long, and was caught off of Nova Scotia, Canada in 1977 (Source 2 and 3). The American lobster is the largest species of lobster (Source 3). Many giant lobsters caught today are released because of respect for their large size and seniority, sometimes estimate 50-100 years old. However, the 1977 44-pounder was sold to a restaurant.
I wonder if they taste better younger or older, like a fine wine?
